Is there an Android version of BreathalEyes for sale?
An Android version of BreathalEyes will be available later in 2013. Leave us a note on our contact page and we’ll shoot you an email when downloadable to Android. Who knows you might be picked as a beta tester.
What is Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN)?
HGN is a condition of the eye indicated by the involuntary rhythmic oscillating motion of the pupil left and right across the horizontal field of vision. BreathalEyes is intended for the detection of acquired nystagmus at the extremes of vision.
Is alcohol the only thing that causes Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN)?
There are some medical conditions that also cause HGN. Please consult a physician concerning any medical condition.
Does stabilization matter when scanning with BreathalEyes?
Yes. You will obtain more accurate results when both the sober tester and intoxicated subject are stable. Too much shaking will yield inaccurate results. See our tips page and videos for more help in administering the test.
Why am I getting different results testing the same person?
This can happen for several reasons. More than likely there is too much shaking, but there also may not be enough light or the subject's eye is not open far enough or looking all the way to their side. Make sure to be just a few inches from their face and fill the entire box with the subject's eye. When the eye is fully framed, well lit and steady you are ready to test.
Why did BreathalEyes tell me that a sober person is drunk?
BreathalEyes was built to assume it is always being used on somebody that has been drinking. That includes certain assumptions about the way alcohol affects the movement of the eye. The fluctuation of the eye as it looks further & further towards the side of the face, for example, becomes much more exaggerated as more alcohol enters the blood stream. However, that doesn't mean that a sober eye can't be caused to move in the same way.
So, when BreathalEyes looks at somebody's eye, it can only assume that their reason for use is because they have been consuming alcohol. (If the subject has not been drinking, then there is no alcohol in their blood stream. Which means there is nothing to detect.) Given the assumption that the user has been drinking, the BreathalEyes knows that if the eye does exhibit signs of HGN it is mostly likely due to the presence of alcohol in the user's blood stream. Which means that even when it's looking at a sober eye, the app thinks it is looking at an eye being affected by alcohol to some degree & reacts accordingly.
BreathalEyes is intended to give people who have been drinking a reasonable idea of how intoxicated they have become. To that end, we have tested it (& a breathalyzer) on a couple hundred drunk people at this point & it has shown to be accurate within +/-.02% when used on those intoxicated individuals.
Why did you make this app?
As a reminder to be consciously aware of my alcohol intake. There are many people who like to drink and be responsible. BreathalEyes is a new way to do that.
What updates are you planning?
We are releasing version 2.0 of BreathalEyes which uses the video capabilities of your smart phone instead of the static images of the camera very soon! More updates to follow.
Does my iPhone need to be connected to the Internet for BreathalEyes to work?
No. BreathalEyes does not require an Internet connection to function. Once you have downloaded BreathalEyes to your iPhone, it will work wherever you go.
What models of the iPhone does BreathalEyes work on?
BreathalEyes requires an iPhone 4 or up for optimal results. It will work on an iPhone 3GS though the camera’s resolution is not ideal nor will you be able to use the light feature.
Does BreathalEyes data mine my phone?
No, BreathalEyes doesn’t even know where you are, when you use it, or why. We respect your privacy. BreathalEyes does not store or send information to or from your phone. I have more questions about BreathalEyes, who do I ask?
